Finding perfection in Imperfection | Impermanent | Incomplete

A new house must not be everything new! This project choose to re-design a double storey terrace house, one of the most common typology housing in Malaysia, giving the most common old house a new look, new system, with a new life. The design project intends to reorganize the layout of the house with an open plan with opening to allow natural light into the house. Wabi-Sabi teaches us to accept and live with imperfections, and this project
demonstrates this quality by applying simple architectural material use as its raw state in the interior space as a beauty in life to live with. The open plan also suggested for people living within the same house to gather and interacts, that require better air conditioning system to keep the spaces at comfort. With the Daikin Home Central Air Conditioning system, all the spaces can achieve cooling comfort efficiently yet ceiling height and aesthetic will not be compromised with its minimal, slim and sleek design. In this project, greenery landscape is introduced inside and outside of the space to bring nature closer to living while we are staying at home, working from home in this pandemic.

Hey to the judges that seeing this document and I wish you have a good day. My name is Tan Jin Long I am a student from a academy called Mobius Academy.

So talking about my concept for this year “Daikin Layout Competition “is coming from industrial design, and why industrial? Because what I see in my vision industrial design always come with these huge window and spacious space where light is exposed in the space with all the exposed element and I know is suitable for this challenging layout.

But no just style is my concept a style is a style represent something but what my second concept is human interaction. Which mean why today human can’t be in 18s having their time to talk and not just looking phone.

“Human is like a magnet, we need to connect with each other”

Therefore, I create a layout where I called “Human Bonding” where all space can be connected and can be seen at the same time, making the family closer and closer and not just digital. Giving the space where they can be fun and bonding together and same time have privacy.

That’s all I have to say and I have done my best to give judges see the best of mine design.

Thank you for your time and have a good day.

Dark Luxury

As styling dark and moody interior has grown as a new favourite trend, many may have the intention to implement in their modern household while worried about the utilisation of air conditioning to the space since it may be in contrast with the room. The design idea incorporates dark colours along with the touch of natural elements and materials such as natural stones, timber, plants, and animal-like decorations to bring nature into residential interior. As dark colours add depth and character to the space, a touch of gold especially on lighting brightens up the mood with a luxurious ambience. Even though empowering, with the mix of dark luxury and natural elements, the interior remains to give off a comfortable residential environment for occupants as it is designed to be minimal and sleek. With this, the use of Daikin HCAC products that has a minimal outlook could blend in well with the spaces, complimenting with each element besides performing its functions.

BRIGHT & DARK is a concept that arises because of people’s different aesthetics. Each room with different design will be able to highlights different people’ side as that can reflect the contrast of BRIGHT & DARK. I was wondering why do people always fix by only one design style in a design unit, every client have their own taste on interior design. Therefore, BRIGHT & DARK concept was born for the contradiction between using one design style or follow people’s preference. In the Kitchen and Living Room will be brighter as these will be the area that mostly used, so design with mixture of zen and minimalist style in brighter colour tone. In Bedroom and Closet will be Hong Kong style(aka modern simplicity), design in these area will be in darker to link back the design concept of BRIGHT&DARK. For the part of linking the design, colour matching will be the best choice as all different design styles have their own specific colour tone to represent so in the presentation board have shown that the gradient of brightness is changing from room to room. From kitchen to closet, form bright to dark. And so, Daikin air-conditioner will be the focus of the design, so the color matching of ceiling and walls will be based on the colour of Daikin air-conditioner. For most of the designer will think that designing with different style is just like taking a high risk, but it a great chance and platform for students to propose their own design thoughts so taking this risk will be my opportunity of learning as a student.

Space Safari

In a noisy, densely overpopulated modern world full of visual advertisements, non-recyclable materials, excess of different objects people need to find own Space Safari. This project is about escape from the reality, and ran to outer space. Outer Space is extremely mysterious, elegant, and there are silence because space is vacuum and so there’s no medium for sound to travel through. Confronting the informational squall, we want to have a visually clean and simple interior. So that, the design idea incorporates with white and grey color scheme, round smoothing shape and natural element such as tree and rock to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere in interior. A big blurred sphere window with bucida tree gives the character to the interior, makes it futuristic and mysterious. Let us use special but simple design to create space illusions, and know that people like enjoying peaceful weather and nature in silence is something every one like, we can use them to help us achieve this goal.

The concept is heavily inspired by the Japandi aesthetic which derived from a world view that centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfections. The Japandi style is a style that intelligently combines Scandinavian practicality and Japanese minimalism. A very harmonious hybrid that stands out for its functionality and organization. Japandi searches for simplicity and harmony with nature. The use of natural materials which are perfectly combined with the warm and light-colors that are classic in Japan, giving a light touch of oriental elegance to the laconic interior.

My dream home is a place of beauty, serenity and inspirational. In my mind, I hope that my dream house is far from main city and industrial area due to I like the quiet environment. Waking up to the sound of nature by the sound of birds, perched in the tree branches.

In a nutshell, a dream house would reflect our feelings, thoughts and personality. If we live in a place close to the serenity of nature, our minds and bodies will be filled with positive energy.

Subtraction in life, Regress Origin

I define home as a place that is unpretentious and precious, minus all the beauty in front of me, and feels the warmth of simplicity with my heart. In the modern society where things are turbulent and material desires are overflowing, “subtraction in life” embodies a brand-new life concept, which inspires people to think about the origin and true meaning of life.

So this time the design style uses wabi-sabi style. Wabi-sabi is a kind of Zen, a world view, reminding us to return to the origin of life, giving people a life aesthetic of simplicity, tranquility, softness, nature, and so on. The main material and color combination is a neutral color, which is mainly made of cement, wood, rattan, and linen, and matched with the green plants around the house to form a soft tone, emphasizing the true appearance of things under the traces of time.

The overall design only embeds things that are necessary and beautify. Eliminates many unnecessary decorations in the design.

In addition, it will be named IN CONTROL for this project because when designing everything such as natural light, indoor ventilation, space planning, functioning, indoor color matching and the overall sense of touch and vision are under control.

Match with daikin hcac product to use different functions of air-conditioning in each different space, so that the space can be taken care of.

In addition to the function of air conditioning, their appearance is also very minimal and fashionable, which makes the space design look more elegant, does not affect the beauty, does not appear particularly prominent, and can be perfectly integrated into the design.

The residention design concept development natural and clear tone. Considering that the owner is a person who loves nature and energy saving, the design of the house has natural light and natural wind function. The key area is in the family area through skylights to allow natural light and wind to ow into the house to achieve a natural feeling.

The residental design idea was Tenderness and warmth while complementing with all elements as a welcoming residential house together with Daikin HCAC products. To be honest, as the brief was to design a residential house of any design concept while implementing Daikin HCAC products, hence this became quite a challenge whereby the design direction was unclear fromthe start. With this, I am glad to receive support guidance and reference from my family, friends and lecturer in this competition.

As contemporary living continues to be dominated by sleek and minimal looks, many city dwellers like myself, forced to stay at home during the pandemic, have become disenchanted with the somewhat sterile and impersonal aesthetics of modern homes. In response to this, my dream home would be one that feels like walking into a grandma’s house, cosy, lively and down-to-earth. It feels comfortable because it has a familiar and lived-in quality to it. Granny Chic is an updated take on traditional style for the 21st century, a marriage between the past and the present. It is brought to life through embracing natural materials and ‘old-fashioned’ patterns, while maintaining a brightly coordinated colour palette. Quality furniture that are classically shaped, perhaps a thrifted vintage collection, gives it a timeless look. By mixing in a few modern elements, the style is nostalgic and comfortable without looking kitschy

Gong Nekara House resonates the marriage between old and Modern. The design anticipates to blend the unique design elements that dwells in traditional Malay House however still portrays the touch of modern elements. An interior setting that can balance the sense of now and the future; the feel of contemporary.

Inspired by the function of ‘Gong Nekara’ as one of traditional music. The instrument is being used as symbolism, delivering communication and a work of art during its times, the design is intended to the same. An interior that can be remember for its blending between old and new while improving the occupant’s life quality through

the interior itself.

The project is a two- storey house with three main components area which is ‘Rumah ibu’ (main core of the house), ‘Rumah Tengah/ Selang’ (Dining Area) and ‘Dapur’ (kitchen). Still relying on the nuance of the Gong as music instrument, rhythm and flow between these spaces are connected with an external staircase that echoes the feel of ‘kampung’ ambience. The separation of external and internal are buried in the design, for the dwellers can experienced the serenity of breeze sound rustle into the trees and at the same time harvesting the natural ventilation.

The material used for the furniture’s and soft furnishing are deliberately using a textured natural material such as rattan, woods and rugs. Colours are controlled with nature palettes to create subtle and fresh moods with minimal bold hue used for accentuation. The house is installed with Daikin HCAC System which allowing the aesthetic of wood ceiling design is achievable with their sleek and slim design of blower unit.

Gong Nekara speaks on its own sound, traditional yet modern, indoor but blends with the outdoor, sustain through its time.

Modern-Lux Hideaway
Modern-Lux Hideaway is to create a sense of journey or travelling. Due to the current pandemic Covid-19, it is no longer allowed to travel to other amazing countries. Hence, the design purpose is to create a space that allows people to feel like they are in adifferent county. It allows the opportunity to create a space that feels like a hideaway that located away from the busy city while being safe. Therefore, creating a modern design using different types of natural materials and plants alongside a strong vibe can create a relaxing and luxurious interior that helps people temporarily escape from the busy city and current pandemic.

The interior was inspired from the theme of designing a “dream house”. The colour palette of the interior space includes most grey tones and a pop of burgundy red. This creates emphasis on the cohesion of colours whilst having a fun contrast, which reflects on my dream house where a normal house should have a pop of colour which ties in the whole environment. Minimal materials were used in the interior, such as wood and cement wash which blends well together. This concept is everlasting and easily liked by consumers as the pop of colour can be customizable.

A dream home environment that encapsulates the tranquility and beauty of spring will be the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The design concept is “Spring in the Air” which is inspired by the modern Neoclassical design. This concept is brought to life using three key elements of spring which are birds, flowers, and natural breeze.

This design utilizes Chinoiserie Wallpaper to provide the overall visuals of the home with elements of birds and flowers. Together with the combination of the sleek curved furniture and decor, it creates an harmonious environment that is fresh and close to nature.

Daikin HCAC products has an option for every space in the home which can integrate seamlessly with the design concept. They function well in the background to provide the homeowner with natural breeze indoors.

Every corner of the space gives an ambience of “Spring in the Air” with birds chirping and fragrant flowers blooming amidst the gentle spring breeze. The home is then transformed into a space that provides a great feeling of warmth and comfort.

The Incredible ‘Companion’
My Dream collection of KAWS’ classic ‘Companion’ figures (by Brian Donnelly) inspired thegreening of the interior space design, in a humble semi-detached home. The courtyard sets as a center stage transforming the KAWS character into a gigantic 4.7m height green wire netting structure, stretching across the two floors. Green creepers gradually grow and turn the entire figure into a lively green figure, providing natural shades and freshness to the surrounding spaces. The flowing water channel adds good Feng Shui as it is the ancient Chinese symbol of prosperity and abundance The sustainable and refreshing design of the courtyard is enhanced with Daikin’s Home Central Air Conditioning system.

First of all, I would like to thank Daikin for organizing this Youth Design Competition to give opportunity to interior design students to explore and express their creativity. I am very excited and overwhelmed to get awarded for Gold Award in this competition.

The design “Dark Luxury” is a residential house developed from the worries of the public on implementing a dark mood board into their houses together with the utilization of air conditioners as styling dark and moody interiors have become a trend nowadays. Even though dark elements are very empowering for residential spaces, the idea is to design a welcoming yet stylish house with the combination of gold and nature elements. All in all, the design is created with depth and character while complementing with all elements as a welcoming residential house together with Daikin HCAC products. To be honest, as the brief was to design a residential house of any design concept while implementing Daikin HCAC products, hence this became quite a challenge whereby the design direction was unclear from the start. With this, I am glad to receive support guidance and reference from my family, friends and lecturer in this competition.

Japandi
As time passes by, people tend to forget the traditional elements in interior design. Nowadays, a lot of
large scale houses are designed with luxurious elements such as golds and marbles. This new design idea
aims to reintroduce the forgotten warm colours of Japanese design with the neutral colours of
Scandinavian design. Japandi focuses on a minimalistic yet practical design with the application of
Daikin’s HCAC Products. As the timber bring warmness to the space, the bold neutral colours (such as
navy blue and black) adds a character and contract to the space. The designs are kept simple with clean
lines and it brings a cozy and homey feel to the space.
